  • Facility Registration Support

    Not just anyone can perform work activities on Highway and Cargo tanks. In order to perform Manufacture, Assembly, Modification, Repairs, Tests, or Inspections, your facility must be registered to do these activities for each applicable TC spec. tank. KAYO provides support throughout the facility registration process to help make the registration submission and process smooth and efficient.

    One of the requirements for registration is the creation and adoption of a CSA B620 Quality Control Manual. We are happy to work with you to develop a manual that suits your specific needs.

  • TCRN Highway Tank Design and Analysis

    We provide full-service engineering support to meet your TCRN needs. Our team delivers comprehensive design, analysis, and technical review to ensure compliance with both ASME and CSA standards.

  • TCRN Regulatory Compliance and Application Support

    On the regulatory side, we take care of compiling and submitting your TCRN application to a Design Review Agency (DRA) and offer continued support throughout the review process right up to final approval by Transport Canada.

    For TDG Highway Tanks which do not require a TCRN, a Manufacturer’s Identification Number (MDIN) is applied, and the work must be signed off by a TC Design Engineer.     If your facility is or would like to be registered to perform Highway Tank Inspections and/or Tests, you must have qualified Inspectors/Testers. We help guide you through the code requirements and offer both Training and Supervision as required by CSA B620.

Highway Tank FAQs

  • If you are performing work (including remounts) on a TDG Highway Tank or any other associated components governed by B620 (piping, bumper, damage protection, etc.), you must be registered to do the specific work required with Transport Canada. In fact, there can be severe penalties for performing this work without Registration, ranging from fines to imprisonment.

  • A quick summary of Highway Tanks which require a TCRN as specified in CSA B620:

    • TC 331

    • TC 338

    • TC 341

    • TC 407 with MAWP > 35 psig or vacuum conditions, FRP exempted

    • TC 412 with MAWP > 15 psig, or vacuum conditions, FRP exempted

    • TC 51

    • TC 60

    • TC 11

    For all others, a TCRN is not required. However, the design must be reviewed and signed off by a Transport Canada Design Engineer.

    Special note: TC-423 spec. tanks have other specific requirements regulated by the Explosives Regulatory Division (ERD) of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

  • For most common tank types, there is reciprocity between the US and Canada, allowing both Transport Canada and DOT specification tanks to be used interchangeably in either country. If you are unsure or have a less common lading/tank type, please reach out with any questions.

  • Information on Classification can be found online on the Canadian Justice Laws Website in Part 2 and Schedules 1-3.

  • Full details on selecting the appropriate Means of Containment (MOC) for a Classified Dangerous Good can be found on the Justice Laws Website, Part 5, as well as on the Transport Canada Containers web page. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions specific to your application.

    • CSA B621 is used to determine the selection of Highway Tanks for Classes 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, and 9 dangerous goods.

    • CSA B622 is used to determine the selection of Highway Tanks for Class 2 dangerous goods.

  • No, TDG Highway Tanks are exempt from the scope of CSA B51 and therefore CRN requirements.

  • In short, no. A B620 Quality Control Manual have specific considerations that will not be present in an ASME Quality Control Manual. While it is possible to create a combined Quality Manual with the requirements for both, it is most often advised to keep them separate.

  • When purchasing a used Highway Tank, extreme caution is warranted! To be eligible for continued use in TDG service, you must have the following:

    • Highway Tank Certificate of Compliance (CoC)

    • Legible Metal Identification Plate (MIP) installed on the tank

    • Proof of (passing) up to date inspections and tests

    If any of the above is missing, you will need to rectify prior to putting into service. We are happy to support you through this process.
